Mount a bonded-bezel display through the cutout using the adhesive system specified by its manufacturer. Do not add mounting screws unless the display drawing provides suitable mounting points. The bezel needs a continuous, flat bonding surface around the opening, with clearance behind the panel for the display body and cables. An adhesive bond may retain the display without providing a documented environmental seal. Confirm both functions before choosing the enclosure or releasing the cutout drawing.
What you need before cutting
Obtain the display manufacturer's mechanical drawing, installation instructions and adhesive application requirements. A screen diagonal does not define the cutout, bezel overlap or usable adhesive footprint. Use the display module enclosure fit checks to establish the physical envelope before detailing the bond.
Have these items available:
- The exact display model, drawing revision and permitted mounting orientation.
- Cutout dimensions, corner radii, tolerances and permitted panel thickness.
- Bezel dimensions and the complete adhesive footprint, including any gaps or pull tabs.
- Requirements for panel flatness, surface finish, cleaning and any approved primer.
- Adhesive application temperature, pressure, dwell time and service temperature limits.
- Rear connector dimensions, cable bend requirements and service access.
- A supported panel, suitable cutting tools, deburring tools and approved cleaning materials.
Choose the installation style before ordering. A surface-mounted bezel sits above the enclosure face. A flush installation needs a recess with a continuous bonding ledge. Neither arrangement automatically provides better sealing.
The cutout and display-window guide covers opening details and sealing fundamentals. The particular display instructions must establish the adhesive requirements.
Do not assume a catalog display housing accepts every display with the same diagonal. Our HMI enclosures are built around IMD panel PCs or IMD touch monitors with an IMD mini PC. Compatibility with another bonded-bezel module requires a separate drawing review.
Mount the display without loading the glass
-
Confirm what the adhesive is intended to do.
Check whether the documented bond provides retention, environmental sealing, or both. A bezel bonded to the display glass does not establish how that assembly seals against your panel. Confirm that the supplied adhesive is intended for the actual panel material and finish.
If the instructions do not describe a sealed installation, do not assign one. Ask the display manufacturer for an approved mounting method, or choose a panel-mount display with documented sealing hardware.
-
Set the cutout from the mechanical drawing.
The display body passes through the opening; the bezel and adhesive remain supported outside it. Include corner radii, locating features and connector projections. Do not enlarge the opening simply because the body feels tight during a trial fit.
Check the minimum remaining bonding land at every edge, including the corners. For example, a nominal 0.24 in [6 mm] overlap with a 0.16 in [4 mm] adhesive footprint leaves only 0.08 in [2 mm]. That remainder must accommodate cutout, placement and bezel tolerances; it is not a recommended minimum. Use the manufacturer's required land and your actual tolerance stack.
-
Choose surface mounting or a properly detailed recess.
Surface mounting usually requires fewer enclosure features. The bezel stands proud by the glass or bezel thickness plus the installed adhesive thickness. Protect exposed edges from impact without obstructing the screen or pressing against the glass.
For flush mounting, calculate recess depth from the actual bezel stack and installed adhesive thickness. Do not use the uncompressed liner-and-tape thickness. Specify the ledge width, corner geometry, flatness and finished surface on the drawing.
A recess must not create a pocket that holds cleaning liquid against the bond. Review the installed orientation, drainage outside the sealed boundary and access for cleaning. A flush face is not automatically a hygienic or washdown-qualified design.
-
Check the panel and trial-fit the assembly.
Cut and deburr the opening before installing electronics. Remove all chips and protect the intended adhesive land from scratches. Check for panel bow, raised edges and local distortion around the opening.
Trial-fit the display using the method permitted by its manufacturer, without exposing the adhesive prematurely. Confirm that the body clears the opening and the bezel lands evenly. Check connectors, cable bends, rear-cover clearance and the intended removal path.
Do not use adhesive pressure to flatten a distorted panel. That stores stress in the bezel and can leave sections of the bond poorly seated.
-
Prepare the bonding surface as specified.
Use only cleaners and preparation methods compatible with the adhesive, enclosure finish and display materials. Remove machining lubricant and contamination without leaving a film. Allow the surface to dry completely before bonding.
Keep the panel and display within the specified application temperature range. Cold metal may collect condensation even when the surrounding room seems dry. Do not apply primer, abrade a finish or add liquid sealant unless the approved process calls for it.
-
Locate the display before exposing the adhesive.
Use approved locating features or a temporary fixture that cannot damage the glass. Check orientation and cable access before removing the liner. Keep fingers and tools away from the adhesive surface.
Apply pressure where, and as, the manufacturer specifies. Support the panel behind the bonding land so it cannot flex excessively. Do not press on an unsupported active screen or use screws to pull the bezel into position.
Observe the specified dwell or cure period before loading, cleaning or exposing the assembly. Pressure-sensitive adhesive develops its bond differently from a curing liquid adhesive; follow the requirements for the actual system.
-
Restrain cables and any separately supported hardware.
Anchor cables to the enclosure structure so connector forces do not peel the bezel bond. Leave sufficient service slack without forcing tight bends behind the display. Support a separate computer or power supply independently.
Add a rear support or retention frame only when the display manufacturer permits that arrangement. It must not push the display outward, bend the glass or interfere with thermal expansion. Where screw mounting is essential, select a documented screw-mounted assembly instead of modifying a bonded-bezel module.
Checks before service
Inspect the complete perimeter after bonding. Look for lifted corners, exposed adhesive, contamination, glass damage and uneven seating. Confirm that cables remain restrained when the rear cover opens and closes.
Test touch operation after the enclosure is assembled and bonded as required. Metalwork, nearby conductors and mechanical stress can affect some touch systems. Successful operation on the bench does not replace a final assembled check.
Our stainless enclosure ratings are manufacturer ratings: rated NEMA 4X / IP66 by the manufacturer; not UL listed. Those ratings do not automatically transfer through an added display opening. Review the enclosure rating after mounting devices before specifying the completed assembly.
A visual inspection cannot demonstrate an ingress rating. Any required environmental verification needs a defined procedure appropriate to the completed design. Perform water-related checks de-energized, with sensitive equipment protected or removed as the procedure requires. Check separately whether moisture entered through the bezel bond, another penetration or the enclosure cover.
For water appearing around the display perimeter, the display-window gasket and fastener checks help separate panel distortion and interface problems. A bonded bezel still needs its own adhesive-specific acceptance criteria.
What the approval drawing must show
Record the interface dimensions rather than supplying only the display's sales description. Use the cutout designer to locate openings, then include the supporting installation details with the drawing request.
| Drawing item | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Display identity | Exact model, mechanical drawing revision and mounting instructions |
| Enclosure body | Material, width, height, depth and installed orientation |
| Opening | Width, height, corner radii, tolerances and datum locations |
| Bonding land | Continuous usable width, flatness, finish and prohibited surface treatments |
| Flush recess, if needed | Depth, ledge geometry, corner details and external liquid drainage |
| Adhesive system | Approved material, preparation, application conditions and inspection requirements |
| Rear clearance | Display body, connector access, cable bends and cover clearance |
| Mechanical loads | Cable restraints and any manufacturer-approved independent support |
| Environmental requirement | Required completed-assembly protection and verification method |
| Service plan | Display removal access and replacement adhesive requirements |
A recess or unusual bonding ledge may require more than new openings in an existing body. The custom stainless enclosure options distinguish cutout work from a fully custom enclosure. Review the complete interface before approving fabrication; a factory-cut opening alone does not establish the display seal.
Mistakes that cost the seal or the rating
- Treating adhesive as a gap filler. Tape cannot reliably compensate for burrs, warped sheet or unsupported corners.
- Cutting to the visible screen size. The body opening and adhesive footprint come from different parts of the drawing.
- Adding screws through the bezel. Undocumented holes can damage the glass, internal conductors or seal path.
- Clamping the display against a rear cover. Closing the enclosure must not impose an uncontrolled load on the screen.
- Adding sealant around an uncertain bond. An exposed bead does not establish compatibility, retention or a tested seal.
- Reusing disturbed adhesive. Follow the documented replacement process after removal; do not assume the original bond can be restored.
- Claiming a rating from the empty enclosure. The display, bond, panel geometry and remaining penetrations determine the completed boundary.
If the required service loads, cleaning exposure or replacement method cannot be supported by the documented adhesive installation, change the mounting design. Choose an approved mounting assembly rather than improvising screw retention around bonded glass.

Questions
Can you mount a bonded-bezel display with screws instead of adhesive?
Use screws only where the display manufacturer provides suitable mounting points or an approved retention assembly. Do not drill the glass, bezel or display body. If screw retention is a project requirement, choose a display designed for that mounting method rather than modifying an adhesive-mounted module.
Does the supplied bezel adhesive make the enclosure watertight?
Not necessarily. Adhesive may provide mechanical retention without a documented environmental seal. Confirm the intended function, compatible panel surface, continuous sealing footprint and installation conditions. The completed enclosure also depends on its other openings, covers and cable entries.
How do you make a bonded-bezel display flush with the enclosure face?
A flush installation requires a recess with a supported bonding ledge. Its depth depends on the bezel construction and installed adhesive thickness. Specify flatness, tolerances and cleaning access, and avoid geometry that traps liquid against the bond. Follow the display manufacturer's mounting limits.
Does an adhesive-mounted display need support behind the panel?
The adhesive might be the intended display support, but cable pull and connector loads should not be transferred into it. Restrain cables to the enclosure structure. Add separate display support only when the manufacturer permits it, without bending the glass or forcing the bezel away from the panel.
