NEMA 4X enclosures
NEMA 4X enclosures keep out windblown dust, rain, splashing and hose-directed water, are undamaged by ice forming on the outside, and add a corrosion test that Type 4 does not have. That makes 4X the usual choice for washdown, outdoor and corrosive locations. We build 65 wall-mount sizes, 6 × 4 × 4 in to 60 × 36 × 16 in, each in 304 and 316L stainless with a #4 brushed finish, rated NEMA 4X / IP66 by the manufacturer (not UL listed) and delivered in 10 business days.

IP66 is a different test: an IEC 60529 code for dust-tight and powerful water jets that says nothing about corrosion, ice or gaskets. NEMA's own table shows Types 4 and 4X meeting or exceeding IP66, not the reverse. NEMA 4 vs 4X vs IP66, compared.

NEMA 4X enclosures: questions
Is NEMA 4X the same as IP66?
No. They are different tests from different standards. NEMA's comparison shows Types 4 and 4X meeting or exceeding IP66, but an IP66 enclosure is not automatically NEMA 4 or 4X: IP codes say nothing about corrosion, ice or gasket aging, and the NEMA hose test allows no water inside. Do I need NEMA 4X, or is NEMA 4 enough?
Type 4 covers dust, rain and hose-directed water. Choose 4X when the enclosure will see washdown chemicals, salt air, de-icing salt, wastewater or chemical fumes: it adds the corrosion test. Our standard enclosures are stainless and rated 4X; a NEMA 4 enclosure in powder-coated carbon steel is a custom build.
Do these NEMA 4X enclosures carry a UL listing?
No. They are rated NEMA 4X / IP66 by the manufacturer and are not UL listed. If your inspector or specification requires a listed enclosure, read UL 50E, NEMA 250 and listing before you order.
Which depths can I get?
4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 in, depending on the footprint (table above). Usable depth from the mounting panel to the closed door runs from about 84 to 388 mm; each product page checks your deepest device against it.
Does a cutout or cable gland keep the 4X rating?
Only if every fitting carries at least the same type rating and is installed as its maker specifies: the assembled rating is limited by the weakest fitting. Place glands, operators and windows in the cutout designer and we cut them.
