Use a purpose-made sealed panel-mount HDMI feedthrough, not an ordinary coupler hidden behind a cover. Specify its protection with the cap closed, with a cable connected, and during connection. Those conditions may have different ratings.
For an industrial PC inside an enclosure, an external video connection can avoid opening the main door for display access. The selection still needs mechanical clearance, a documented sealing arrangement and a verified video path. Choose the complete interface before releasing the enclosure cutout drawing.
Match the port to the exposure
Start with where the port will sit and how you will use it. A service connection in a dry equipment room faces different conditions from one beside a washdown line.
Record these conditions before choosing the connector:
- Water exposure: occasional splashes, hose-directed cleaning or standing water around the connector recess.
- Contamination: airborne dust, conductive debris, oil mist or cleaning residue.
- Chemicals: cleaning agents, concentration, temperature and contact time.
- Outdoor exposure: sunlight, rain, freezing conditions and condensation.
- Service frequency: occasional troubleshooting or frequent monitor connections.
- Connected operation: temporary use in a controlled dry area or continuous operation in the normal environment.
An ordinary HDMI plug does not become sealed because the panel receptacle has a gasket. Some interfaces protect the opening only when their cap is closed. Others require a matching sealed cable assembly while connected.
If you need a temporary monitor connection, a capped receptacle may suit the job. If the cable remains connected during cleaning, specify documented protection for that exact mated assembly.
Position the port away from direct spray where practical, but do not treat sheltered placement as a rating. For broader connector selection, use the guidance on waterproof panel-mount connectors.
Specify the rating in each connection state
Our enclosures are rated NEMA 4X / IP66 by the manufacturer; not UL listed. Adding a connector requires a separate review of the modified enclosure and its installed components.
Ask for documentation covering the exact receptacle, cap, gasket and mating cable. A rating shown beside a connector photograph may apply only to one assembled condition.
Check three distinct states:
- Capped: the specified cap is fully engaged, with its seal correctly seated.
- Mated: the specified cable connector is attached and its locking or sealing mechanism is engaged.
- Unmated: the cap is open and no cable is attached.
Do not assume the unmated state has water protection. Define a dry-service procedure when protection is unavailable during connection or disconnection.
An IP code addresses ingress under its stated test conditions. It does not establish every requirement associated with a NEMA enclosure type, including corrosion resistance. NEC 110.28 states that IP ratings are not a substitute for enclosure type ratings in US installations.
A component marked IP67 therefore does not automatically preserve a NEMA 4X enclosure assembly. Confirm the required enclosure type, mounting instructions and basis for the finished assembly's rating before fabrication.
The practical issue is the complete installation, not the highest number on an individual component. The article on enclosure ratings after mounting devices explains that distinction.
Choose the enclosure material
We build custom stainless enclosures in 304 and 316L. Choose the body material from the environment, then check the interface materials separately.
304 can suit many indoor industrial environments where the cleaning process and contamination are compatible. Consider 316L where chloride exposure makes improved corrosion resistance valuable. Neither grade is immune to corrosion, and neither choice establishes chemical compatibility for the connector seals.
Record the connector shell, mounting hardware, cap and gasket materials on the specification. Check each against the cleaning chemistry and operating temperature. A stainless enclosure cannot protect an unsuitable cap or gasket from chemical attack.
Also review contact between dissimilar metals where moisture can remain around the flange. Use the connector manufacturer's approved mounting arrangement rather than adding unverified insulating washers or sealants.
The custom stainless enclosures and factory cutouts page covers the choice between openings in a catalog body and a fully custom enclosure. Neither approach removes the need to verify the installed interface seal.
Allow room for plugs, cables and heat
Choose the connector architecture before setting enclosure depth. A panel coupler, a feedthrough with an internal pigtail and a recessed service interface occupy different rear envelopes.
A rigid coupler needs room for the internal cable plug and its bend. A pigtail moves that connection elsewhere, but still needs support and a serviceable internal route. A recessed interface may protect the external connection mechanically while consuming more internal space.
Measure the full rear envelope from the inside mounting surface. Include the connector body, plugged-in cable, strain relief and the cable manufacturer's bend allowance.
For an illustrative layout, assume these dimensions:
- Rear connector projection: 0.8 in [20 mm].
- Plug and strain-relief projection beyond the connector: 1.6 in [41 mm].
- Additional cable-turning allowance from the selected cable drawing: 1.2 in [30 mm].
That arrangement needs 3.6 in [91 mm] before any additional installation clearance. These are assumed layout values, not dimensions for a catalog connector. Replace them with the selected assembly's drawing and cable requirements.
Check nearby wiring duct, backplates, door stiffeners and components throughout the door's movement. An internal HDMI cable attached to a moving door needs a controlled flex loop and support at both ends.
The architecture tradeoff resembles the choice described in panel-mount USB connectors with pigtails or daughterboards, although HDMI signal requirements must be checked separately.
Do not count the service opening as ventilation. A passive feedthrough provides no deliberate cooling, and the industrial PC still determines much of the enclosure heat load. Include any active video adapters in the heat calculation and keep cables clear of cooling paths.
Mount the interface without breaking the seal
Use the selected connector's dimensional drawing, not a tracing of its flange. Verify the opening profile, corner radii, mounting-hole locations, panel-thickness range and required surface condition.
The sealing land must remain continuous beneath the gasket. Keep mounting holes, adjacent cutouts, welds and panel bends outside the area required by the connector instructions.
Confirm which side receives the gasket. Also identify any seals needed around mounting screws or through-studs. A perimeter gasket does not necessarily seal every fastener penetration.
Specify the manufacturer's tightening method and torque where provided. Excessive tightening can distort a flange, damage threads or squeeze a gasket out of position. Extra sealant is not a substitute for the documented assembly method.
Choose the face location around actual service access. Leave room to grip the plug, operate a locking collar and close the cap without interference. Check that a tether cannot become trapped beneath the cap seal.
Support internal and external cables so their weight does not load the receptacle. The connector should not become a cable hanger or a stop for door movement.
Use the cutout designer to place the opening and surrounding features. Review actual sealing footprints and rear clearances alongside the layout; spacing checks alone do not establish an ingress rating.
Confirm the video link and service procedure
Mechanical fit does not guarantee a usable picture. Specify the required resolution, refresh rate and any necessary audio or display-handshake functions for the actual source and monitor.
Count every cable segment, coupler and adapter between the PC and display. A passive feedthrough adds connections; it does not regenerate the signal. Avoid assigning a universal maximum cable length without the selected components' documentation.
Verify the complete path using the intended service cable and monitor at the required display mode. Check startup, monitor connection, reconnection and recovery after power cycling. An internal PC may need configuration before it reliably produces a display through the chosen path.
Keep the HDMI connection separate from other service requirements. HDMI does not provide a general-purpose keyboard, mouse or Ethernet connection. If those are needed, specify their interfaces separately rather than assuming one video port solves every access task. The article on adding an RJ45 enclosure service port covers network access planning.
An external port does not authorize energized work or replace a machine's electrical safety procedures. Arrange service so the equipment remains safe, connected cables cannot obstruct operation, and required isolation is maintained.
Put these details on the order
Specify the enclosure and interface together. A cutout diameter alone does not describe the sealing assembly, rear envelope or connected operating condition.

Send the connector drawing and cable details with the enclosure layout. Identify whether the interface will be installed before delivery or by the panel builder, so responsibility is clear.
Before approval, reconcile the drawing with the selected components using the enclosure drawing verification process. Confirm the cap envelope, internal cable route and sealing details before any metal is cut.

Questions
Is a sealed HDMI port protected while a monitor is connected?
Not necessarily. The connector's documentation must identify whether its protection applies with the cap closed, with a specified mating cable connected, or both. An ordinary HDMI cable may provide a working video connection without providing the required environmental seal.
Does an IP67 HDMI connector preserve a NEMA 4X enclosure rating?
No automatic rating transfer occurs. An IP67 component does not establish NEMA 4X protection for the modified enclosure. Verify the exact installed assembly, mounting instructions, connection state and enclosure-type requirements, including corrosion-related requirements that an IP code does not address.
How much clearance does an internal HDMI cable need?
Use the selected connector and cable drawings. Add the connector's rear projection, the plugged-in cable's projection and its required turning allowance. Then check nearby equipment, wiring duct and door movement. Enclosure depth alone does not show whether the usable space behind the port is sufficient.
Can a monitor cable remain connected during washdown?
Only if the specified protection applies with that cable and mating connector installed. Also verify the exposed cable's environmental suitability and provide independent strain relief. If protection applies only with the cap closed, disconnect and cap the interface before cleaning under an appropriate service procedure.
What should accompany an enclosure quote for an HDMI service port?
Provide the exact interface drawing, permitted panel thickness, sealing footprint, mounting details and rear cable envelope. Include the mounting face, location dimensions, required protection in each connection state and the intended video path. Identify responsibility for interface installation and verification of the completed assembly.
