NEMA 4 enclosure drawing callout: what to include

Write separate requirements for the supplied enclosure and the completed panel. Your NEMA 4 drawing callout should define the protected boundary, acceptable rating evidence, responsibility for every penetration, and final acceptance records. A rated empty enclosure does not automatically establish the completed panel’s rating.

Write separate drawing notes for the enclosure supplied and the completed panel. State which boundary needs NEMA Type 4 protection, what evidence is acceptable, and who controls every opening. A rated empty enclosure does not automatically establish the rating of the assembled panel. Your drawing must connect the enclosure requirement to its cutouts, fitted devices, installation instructions and final acceptance records.

What you need before writing the callout

Gather the enclosure outline, component layout, cable schedule and installation conditions before assigning a rating note. Identify whether the drawing covers an empty enclosure, a modified enclosure or a completed control panel.

You need:

  • The required environmental protection, including whether exposure involves rain, hose-directed water, corrosion or temporary flooding.
  • The project’s requirement for manufacturer rating, independent listing or another accepted evaluation route.
  • A drawing showing each penetration, including its face, dimensions, location and sealing arrangement.
  • Installation instructions for glands, operators, displays, disconnect handles, vents and other boundary-mounted devices.
  • Assigned responsibility for enclosure fabrication, device installation, inspection and final assembly verification.
  • The documents and inspection records required before acceptance.

NEMA Type 4 addresses conditions including hose-directed water; it does not specify submersion protection or the additional corrosion resistance of Type 4X. Use the enclosure rating guide to settle that environmental choice before writing drawing notes.

Our custom enclosure ratings are manufacturer ratings for the specified design; our enclosures are not UL listed. If independent listing is mandatory, resolve that requirement before ordering. The listing and manufacturer-rating guide explains the distinction without treating the two routes as interchangeable.

Write the drawing notes in this order

  1. Name the assembly and the protected boundary.

Attach the requirement to an identified drawing item, not an isolated label beside the enclosure outline. State whether it covers the enclosure supply, the completed panel or both at defined stages.

    A completed-panel note can read:

This is a design requirement, not proof that the finished assembly complies. Supporting evidence and acceptance criteria belong in separate notes.

Include any conditions needed to understand the boundary. These can include mounting orientation, installed covers and cable entries. Do not imply protection while the door is open.

  2. State the enclosure supply requirement separately.

Describe the configuration that the enclosure supplier must document. A rating for an unmodified enclosure does not resolve the effects of later openings and fitted devices.

Where manufacturer ratings are acceptable, a supply note can read:

If the enclosure arrives with open cutouts, identify that delivery stage explicitly. Require documentation showing how those openings will be closed in the intended rated configuration. An unsealed cutout is not a completed Type 4 boundary.

Where independent listing is required, specify its scope and the applicable standard separately. An enclosure evaluation and a completed industrial control panel evaluation are different deliverables. UL 50E concerns enclosure environmental considerations; UL 508A addresses industrial control panels. Neither requirement should be left to inference from a general rating label.

  3. Define what each penetration must include.

Give every opening a drawing reference or schedule entry. Include its location, cutout dimensions, tolerances, fitted device and sealing method.

    A useful penetration note is:

Specify cable glands against actual cable outside diameters, not conductor sizes alone. For displays and operators, verify the rating applies to the exposed face in the proposed mounting arrangement.

Matching component ratings are necessary, but they do not independently establish the completed assembly’s rating. The cutouts, glands and HMI windows guide covers the interface details that belong in the penetration schedule.

  4. Assign responsibility at each handoff.

Separate enclosure fabrication from installation and final verification. Factory-cut openings, field-cut openings and later cable changes must have an assigned approval and inspection route.

Drawing item Responsibility to assign Required record
Enclosure design and fabrication Enclosure supply Drawing revision and rating documentation for the specified configuration
Cutout geometry and edge finish Function performing the cutting Dimensional inspection against the approved drawing
Glands, operators and display seals Final assembly Component identification and installation checks
Unused openings Final assembly Closure identification and installation checks
Completed environmental boundary Final panel assembly Configuration review and agreed verification evidence
Changes after acceptance Installation or maintenance function Approved change record and reassessment of affected interfaces

Avoid notes saying only that a component must “maintain the rating.” Name the interface, supporting instructions and verification responsibility instead.

  5. Define delivery and operating configurations.

Distinguish shipping protection from permanent environmental closures. Temporary tape, transport plugs and packing covers must not be mistaken for accepted operating seals.

    A configuration note can read:

Also define any cable-dependent conditions. A gland intended to seal around a cable cannot be accepted as a sealed unused entry without its documented blanking arrangement.

Show mounting penetrations as part of the same boundary review. Bracket fasteners and rear-wall holes can create leakage paths just as cable entries can. Use the enclosure mounting guide for mounting fundamentals rather than repeating them in drawing notes.

  6. Set acceptance evidence before fabrication.

Specify the documents and checks required at each stage. Require the enclosure identification, applicable rating documentation, approved drawing revision and instructions for boundary-mounted devices.

    A practical acceptance note is:

Visual inspection can find missing seals, damaged gaskets and incorrect parts. It cannot reproduce the full environmental evaluation required by a standard.

If project-specific testing is required, agree its procedure, configuration, acceptance criteria and responsible organization before manufacture. Do not substitute an informal hose spray for evaluation against NEMA 250 or UL 50E. Any required water testing must follow an approved safety procedure on de-energized equipment.

  7. Control revisions and substitutions.

Link the rating requirement to the approved drawing revision and penetration schedule. Require review when a gland, display, gasket, enclosure dimension or opening changes.

    A change-control note can read:

A replacement with the same nominal rating may still require a different hole, thickness range or tightening method. The rating label alone does not establish interchangeability.

Use the custom enclosure specification guide for the wider dimensional and procurement requirements surrounding these drawing notes.

Check the drawing and completed assembly

Before drawing release, follow the environmental boundary around every face. Match each opening to a device, permanent closure or explicitly identified assembly-stage condition.

Check that the enclosure note and completed-panel note do not contradict each other. A requirement for independent listing cannot be satisfied merely by submitting a manufacturer rating statement.

The drawing review should confirm:

  • Every opening has a location, geometry, tolerance and intended sealing arrangement.
  • Material and dimensions are specified separately from the environmental rating.
  • Component instructions cover the actual mounting thickness, orientation and cable range.
  • Unused entries have documented permanent closures.
  • Mounting details do not introduce unspecified penetrations or distort the enclosure.
  • Supply-stage documentation and completed-assembly evidence have separate acceptance requirements.

After assembly, inspect gasket continuity, clean sealing surfaces, door alignment and uniform closure. Check fitted devices against their instructions, including specified tightening values. Record actual part identities and any approved deviations.

Keep electrical checks separate from environmental acceptance. A sealed gland does not establish electrical bonding, and a bonding connection does not establish water exclusion. Use the grounding and bonding guide for that separate design requirement.

For an order, submit the approved outline, penetration schedule, rating notes, material requirement and acceptance-document list together. Our custom enclosures let you define material, width, height, depth and every cutout, from one piece. The cutout designer can lay out openings and export the layout with a quote request; it does not replace final configuration verification.

Mistakes that cost the rating

A floating “NEMA 4” label leaves scope undefined. Attach the requirement to a named item and configuration. Distinguish the enclosure supply from the assembled panel.

An IP code is substituted without review. IP codes and NEMA types are not interchangeable specification language. If the drawing requires Type 4, an IP code alone does not satisfy that requirement. The IP rating guide explains the different designation system.

A rated accessory is fitted outside its instructions. Incorrect panel thickness, cable diameter, hole geometry or gasket placement can defeat the intended seal. Capture those conditions in the drawing package.

Openings disappear between drawing revisions. Unscheduled holes and enlarged cutouts break configuration traceability. Include later modifications in the same approval process as the original fabrication.

Inspection is described as certification. A completed inspection sheet records the checks performed; it does not create an independent listing or replace required evaluation evidence.

Type 4 is treated as a material specification. It does not select stainless grade, establish chemical compatibility or provide the additional corrosion requirement of Type 4X. State environmental exposure and material separately, then require evidence for the resulting design.

Questions

Is writing NEMA 4 beside the enclosure outline enough?

Not by itself. The note leaves the protected boundary, acceptable evidence and assembly responsibilities unclear. Identify whether the requirement applies to the enclosure supply or completed panel, then specify the configuration, penetration controls and records required for acceptance.

Does a rated empty enclosure establish the completed panel rating?

No. The enclosure rating documents a defined enclosure configuration. Added displays, glands, operators, mounting holes and unused entries must be addressed in the final assembly. The completed panel needs supporting evidence appropriate to its configuration and the project’s acceptance requirements.

What should the drawing say when independent listing is required?

State independent listing as a separate requirement, including whether it applies to the enclosure or completed panel. Identify the applicable standard and acceptable evaluation route before ordering. Our custom enclosure ratings are manufacturer ratings for the specified design; our enclosures are not UL listed.

Who should verify cutouts and cable glands?

Assign responsibility explicitly in the drawing package. The function cutting an opening should verify its geometry and finish. Final assembly should verify the installed device, gasket, cable fit and closure conditions, then retain records supporting acceptance of the completed environmental boundary.
