What fits in the 14 × 36 × 12 in

A wide display of about 11 × 33 × 4 in (H × W × D) goes in on the removable interior panel, sized to your exact model before production; you approve a dimensioned drawing first. The display itself is not included: name it in the order note or the quote form.

One cover, two jobs

No separate hood to buy, mount, store or lose.

Overhang up to H − D: a 14 in cover on a 12 in deep roof. The exact figure is on your approval drawing.

  1. Sealed The front cover closes on a continuous gasket and six thumb nuts, for storage, transport and off-season.

  2. Lift off Undo the six thumb nuts by hand and lift the cover away from the front.

  3. Lock on top Set the cover on the four roof collars and tighten it down. It overhangs the front by up to 2 in (51 mm) and keeps direct sun and glare off the screen. The cover is fastened, not just set in place.

Heat it can shed, sealed

≈ 38 W at 10 K · ≈ 77 W at 20 K

Q = k · A · ΔT: A = 1.4·W·(H+D) + 1.8·D·H = 1.041 m² (on a wall, IEC/TR 60890), k = 3.7 W/m²K (stainless, still air, no sun). An estimate, not a rating.

Heat check

Example: 23 W, 61 % of what this size sheds sealed at 10 K. Type your own heat to replace it.

Enter the display's power draw from its datasheet, plus anything else inside: nearly all of it ends up as heat.

Shed sealed: still air, no sunShed sealed at 10 K ≈ 38 W

Sun: peak ≈ 338 W on the front, 9× what it sheds sealed (off this chart): the cover, locked on the roof, is its shade: what it does in the sun.

In the sun · 14 × 36 × 12 in

What the cover does in the sun

The display adds its own heat on top of the sun: enter its power in the heat check above. With the cover on the roof, the front is open to the display's own face.

  • Roof under the cover

    0.28 m² (3 sq ft), 36 × 12 in

Locked on the four roof collars, the cover covers the whole roof and reaches out over the screen, keeping direct sun and glare off it. Shade from the part that seals the box: nothing extra to mount.

  • Shields, measured

    25–56 % less temperature rise

above ambient in one enclosure maker's tests of its own top, side and wall shields (outdoor guide). This cover has not been tested that way, so no figure is claimed for it.

  • Colour in full sun

    6 vs 28 °C (11 vs 50 °F) white against black

rise above ambient with nothing inside, in the same maker's chart (colour and shade). Bare brushed stainless needs no paint; for the painted version, a light colour gains less.

Areas on this page, each its own count: heat check A = 1.041 m², the IEC/TR 60890 cooling surface (faces weighted for how freely they shed heat); peak sun 0.33 m², the front; roof 0.28 m², what the cover shades; weather faces 1.10 m², every outside face but the back (material).

Condensation Closed for the night or the off-season, the air inside shrinks about 3.3 % in a 30 to 20 °C cool-down and draws outside air in through any worn gasket. In humid air, plan a heater or desiccant. Condensation guide.

304 stainless · 14 × 36 × 12 in

Outdoors year-round: the 14 × 36 × 12 in in 304

304 stainless does not rely on paint, so scratches and UV do not start rust, and the brushed finish still looks right after years in the weather. It is our recommendation for any enclosure that lives outside year-round. Near de-icing salt or salt air, ask us for 316L. Type 304 (UNS S30400): 17.5–19.5 % chromium, 8.0–10.5 % nickel, no molybdenum, carbon 0.07 % max (ASTM A240); pitting resistance (PREN) about 20.

  • Weather faces

    1.10 m² (11.8 sq ft)

Front, top, bottom and both ends of the 14 × 36 × 12; the back goes to the post or wall on its feet. Rinse with fresh water after salt spray or road splash; stainless-only pads and soft cloths, never steel wool.

  • Cover seal

    ≈ 2.5 m (100 in) round the front

The cover's continuous gasket follows that edge (its own length not measured). It moves with the cover between the front and the roof: look it over each time, since a torn or flattened run lets rain in when closed.

  • Chloride for 304

< 200 ppm in rinse water

The Nickel Institute guideline for 304 at ambient temperature; 316L takes up to about 1,000 ppm. Salt air or de-icing salt on the box is the signal to step up.

304 is the call

  • Inland parks, trailheads and visitor information
  • Transit and kiosk sites away from salted roads
  • Rain, snow and hose-down, rinsed off

Step up to 316L

  • Within 5–10 miles (8–16 km) of salt water
  • Within about 100 m (330 ft) of a salted road, loading dock or parking deck
  • Chlorinated or salty water left to dry on it

Questions about this size

14 × 36 × 12 in: asked and answered

Which display fits the 14 × 36 × 12?

A wide display of about 11 × 33 × 4 in (H × W × D; 279 × 838 × 102 mm), on the removable interior panel. Name your display model in the order note or the quote form: the panel is sized to it before production, and you approve a dimensioned drawing first. The display itself is not included. A bigger display or another shape takes a bigger body, made to order: ask for a quote.

Is it sealed while the display is showing?

Closed, it is sealed: the front cover closes on its continuous gasket under six thumb nuts. Rated NEMA 4X / IP66 by the manufacturer; not UL listed. With the cover on the roof as the sun shade, the front is open to the display's own face, so the display then meets the weather: check its outdoor rating in its datasheet, and close the cover for storage, transport and the off-season.

How does the sun-shade cover work?

Sealed: the front cover closes on a continuous gasket and six thumb nuts, for storage, transport and off-season. Lift off: undo the six thumb nuts by hand and lift the cover away from the front. Lock on top: set the cover on the four roof collars and tighten it down. It overhangs the front and keeps direct sun and glare off the screen. The cover is fastened, not just set in place. No separate hood to buy, mount, store or lose.

How is the 14 × 36 × 12 mounted?

On two rear feet on the rear, two holes each, 34 in (864 mm) centre to centre, for a post, rail, wall or kiosk frame. The hole spacing along each foot is on your approval drawing. It ships at about 60 lb (27 kg) packed, so it is a two-person lift, and the fixings also carry the display. Leave room above the box and in front of it to move the cover.

Will the display overheat in the sun?

Sealed, the box sheds about 38 W at 10 K and 77 W at 20 K above ambient (1.04 m² × k 3.7 W/m²K, IEC/TR 60890, no sun), and peak sun on the front alone is about 338 W. On the roof, the cover shades the top and the screen; in one maker's tests shields cut the temperature rise above ambient by 25 % to 56 % (outdoor guide), not measured on this cover. Add your display's power in the heat check, or size cooling in the heat calculator.

Is 304 stainless right for the 14 × 36 × 12, or does it need 316L?

Yes for indoor sites, routine washdown and most inland outdoor sites: the Nickel Institute guideline puts 304 at water under about 200 ppm chloride. Near salt water or de-icing salt, or where brine or chlorinated sanitizers are left on the surface, take a 316L build, made to order on a quote (request one). The 2.0 mm body and front cover are 304 stainless. Cleaning: 304 is corrosion proof in nitric acid, caustic soda and hydrogen peroxide, but hot organic acids and sulfuric acid call for 316L, and bleach must be rinsed off; see the cleaning-chemicals table.

How do I clean the 14 × 36 × 12?

Fresh water and a soft cloth or a stainless-only pad, then rinse; never steel wool or grinding dust, which leave iron that stains. Rinse de-icing salt splash and chlorinated cleaners off before they dry. Look the cover gasket over each time the cover moves between the front and the roof.

How long does it take?

Made to order and delivered in 10 business days, anywhere in the world, counted from your order; a custom size or panel from your approval of the drawing.
